- You don't _NEED_ the install diskettes. All you need to run Chkdsk is an
- OS/2 boot disk or disks with a copy of chkdsk on it. The install diskettes
- are simply a convenient source that most everyone that runs OS/2 will have
- access to. You can create your own boot disk, either by hand, or by using
- MAKEBOOT.CMD, which can be found at most OS/2 FTP sites. Or just diskcopy
- the first 2 install diskettes.
-
- The reason chkdsk won't work when you've got everything up and running is
- because OS/2 locks important files like OS2.INI, and chkdsk can't (and
- shouldn't, IMO) deal with locked files. One way around this, other that
- booting from a floppy, isto get access to OS/2 before it locks up all those
- files. You can do this by putting "CALL=C:\OS2\CMD.EXE" (sans quotes)
- early on in your config.sys. This will give you an OS/2 command prompt
- early in your boot sequence, and you can run chkdsk, etc, from there. When
- you exit from the CMD shell, booting will continue. And if you're one of
- those types that hates to have to type "exit" everytime you boot up, you
- can replace CMD.EXE with 4OS2.EXE (from the shareware 4OS2 package) and set
- up a .CMD file that will automatically exit if you don't press "y" or
- whatever within a specified time limit.
