  12. Due to the large response of OS2 (including potential users) users who asked me
  13. to send information regarding the conclusions re: SIS chipsets...here goes:

  15. SIS 386 25/33Mhz ===> no reported problems.
  16.  
  17. SIS 486 33Mhz    ===> Mostlikely OK
  18.  
  19. Most 486 33 SIS chipet users reported minimal problems running OS2
  20. ...some reported better than average results running OS2 (very few... to none) 
  21.  
  22. A few 486 OS2 users reported problems that could not be attributed directly
  23. to the hardware chipset.
  24.  
  25. One reported "internal error #????" when trying to run a windows application 
  26. from an os2 command line.  Still do not know the cause. 
  27.  
  28. Another had problems with os2, but indicated that he had mixed 
  29. 3chip/9chip memory SIMMS.  I have heard of of computers having problems
  30. dealing with 3chip memory for some reason or another
  31. (comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware).  Probably older chipsets had problems with 3chip
  32. memory.  Mixing 3chip & 9chip memory could pose another problem.

  34. If you are not sure of which chipset to buy like I did, I got a vendor to
  35. guarantee (return & refund of money) if OS2 did not work.  I ended up getting
  36. a Symphony 486/33 256Cache (direct mapped==> equivalent to 64k write back).
  37. Upgradeable to the DX250.

  39. INCIDENTALLY: 
  40. It was interesting to learn that various vendors make different versions of the
  41. same board (same chipset).  Symphony makes 3 grades, low medium and high.  My
  42. vendor said that he used my type of board (highest grade) for various
  43. server configurations with no hardware problems.  He rated it best for
  44. compatibility.  The different grades vary in size and quality of construction
  45. of the motherboard. My main issue was compatibility!
