- Due to the large response of OS2 (including potential users) users who asked me
- to send information regarding the conclusions re: SIS chipsets...here goes:
-
- SIS 386 25/33Mhz ===> no reported problems.
-
- SIS 486 33Mhz ===> Mostlikely OK
-
- Most 486 33 SIS chipet users reported minimal problems running OS2
- ...some reported better than average results running OS2 (very few... to none)
-
- A few 486 OS2 users reported problems that could not be attributed directly
- to the hardware chipset.
-
- One reported "internal error #????" when trying to run a windows application
- from an os2 command line. Still do not know the cause.
-
- Another had problems with os2, but indicated that he had mixed
- 3chip/9chip memory SIMMS. I have heard of of computers having problems
- dealing with 3chip memory for some reason or another
- (comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware). Probably older chipsets had problems with 3chip
- memory. Mixing 3chip & 9chip memory could pose another problem.
-
- If you are not sure of which chipset to buy like I did, I got a vendor to
- guarantee (return & refund of money) if OS2 did not work. I ended up getting
- a Symphony 486/33 256Cache (direct mapped==> equivalent to 64k write back).
- Upgradeable to the DX250.
-
- INCIDENTALLY:
- It was interesting to learn that various vendors make different versions of the
- same board (same chipset). Symphony makes 3 grades, low medium and high. My
- vendor said that he used my type of board (highest grade) for various
- server configurations with no hardware problems. He rated it best for
- compatibility. The different grades vary in size and quality of construction
- of the motherboard. My main issue was compatibility!
-
- Hope the above helps someone,
- Santosh
