- Hello! I need some advice regarding hardware requirements for OS/2.
- I currently have a 386DX/40 no-name clone with 4MB of RAM and a Seagate
- 89MB IDE drive. I would like to upgrade to OS/2, but will need to
- upgrade my hardware first. First, it would be easiest and cheapest
- to add another 4 1x9 SIMMs for a total of 8MB RAM (cost ~ US$140).
- I could also (according to my motherboard manual) add 4 4x9 SIMMs
- for a total of 20MB RAM (cost ~ US$500).
-
- Can OS/2 use more than 16MB RAM? I have heard that it can't.
- Also, I use the Disney Animation Studio, which requires at least
- 2MB of Expanded (not extended) memory. I understand that OS/2
- takes up 6MB all by itself, so this would leave just 2MB for
- programs. Would 8MB of RAM really give poor performance, and
- would 16MB or 20MB give good performance? I need to know if I
- must spend the extra money to get the bigger memory.
-
- Lastly, I am running out of space on my 89MB Seagate drive and will
- definitely need to buy a new drive before installing OS/2. Because
- of this, several questions come to mind. Is the seek access time
- important to OS/2 performance? It looks like 15-16ms around what
- I might get - under that seems more expensive. How much space is
- generally required for swapping? Are there compression methods
- available under OS/2, and are they reliable and cost effective?
- I don't know if my last question is OS/2-related, but could I
- add a Maxtor IDE drive (15ms 200MB 7213A) as a master or slave to
- work with my existing Seagate 1102A drive? Would I be better
- off buying a single 200MB Maxtor and sell my Seagate if they
- don't work together, or would a second Seagate (16ms 130MB ST3144A)
- a better configuration?
-
- Any replies will be appreciated, either e-mailed or posted to comp.os.os2.
- Thank you in advance.
