- I recently upgraded my 386-33 ISA system with a Micropolis SCSI-2 drive
- and Promise DC-2040 caching controller. Everything has been working
- great right out of the box. I did post a query on comp.periphs.scsi
- regarding the transfer rate (1773 Kb/s) I was seeing for my SCSI
- configuration (1 Meg on the DC-2040). I was assured by several sources
- (one of which went over the calculations with me) that this number is
- on target.
-
- Promise claims no support for OS/2 if the DC-2040 is the secondary
- controller. This is moot for me since I use it as the primary. A big
- plus is tolerance for coresidence. With the DC-2040 I'm able to use
- my Ultrastor 12F as the secondary controller in perfect harmony.
- Other caching controllers such as PSI's EasyCache are not so tolerant.
- Another draw is the DC-2040's price: ~$258. Most other controllers
- which cache up to 16Mb cost about $200 more. These other controllers
- allow some fine tuning for performance which may not be relevant
- anyway since the primary limiting factors are the physical hard drive
- performance and the constraint of the ISA bus.
