- -Interresting it is! I might have a contribution here. I upgraded from 4 to
- 20 Megs a while ago, and after beeing disappointed over still getting low
- memory warnings (I have patched the kernel), I -beeing me- started
- experimenting. I got hold of mem_.exe (was it?) from Hobbes. It contained a
- program reporting available. I dont think it gives the correct "byte sum"
- available, but it does seem fairly consistent in its estimates. Loading
- applications, I could see memory decreasing down to a certain point, then
- stabelize while the swapper.dat grew....
-
- OK, 'nuff of that. Based on this, I took away 4 Meg (I have 4x1M + 4x4M) and
- started up, - NO CHANGE in memory avaiable. (We knew that didn't we...)
-
- I put back the Megs again, booted and set up a Vdisk of 4M in config.sys.
- Booted up, - 4Megs less free space than with 16M without any Vdisk. Now
- that should suggest that a Vdisk is placed within the normal boundries of
- memory that Os/2 itself is caught in. I picked out the 4 Megs, stuffed
- them in a box, and put them away. OS/2 can't use them. (Not yet)
-
- Setting NOSWAP in config.sys is slightly better than useless, even with
- 16Meg. It stops me at about 2 x DOS-box + 2 x winos2 (Don't ask me what I
- use these sessions for... I don't). It seems like OS/2 just likes to know
- it's there...
-
- BUT.... guess what happened when I set the swappath to the VDISK??
-
- No warranty - just try it. I didn't change that setting back, though.
