- DS>the news report i read said that OS/2 was remaining inside the
- DS>existing IBM division which now is based around high end pc's (?)
- DS>and the RS6000 workstations. the usual anti OS/2 line in the
- DS>guardian newspaper weekly computer section gloated over the
- DS>fact that the IBM PC division could now ditch OS/2.
-
- Quoting Business Week ("Big Blue's new baby", 9/14/92, page 32):
- "But IBM-PC, as Big Blue has dubbed it, gains considerable freedom.
- For one thing, it gains distance from IBM's workstation business and
- OS/2 operating system, which got its own separate unit in the shuffle."
- Ultimately, however, everybody reports to Cannavino.
-
- DS>also, someone from the new PC company (cannavino ?) said that
- DS>it would be so independent that they might consider getting an
- DS>indenpendent stock market quotation in a couple of years.
-
- That was apparantly under consideration at one point, but that
- consideration has been dropped. It's now a "separate operating unit"
- (whatever that means), and IBM will not be reporting the unit's
- operating revenues or earnings.
