- In upgrading my Packard Bell 386sx/20 to Windows 3.1, the windows drivers
- with the PB have failed to setup. The problem appears to be with the
- changes in Win 3.1 and its setup (the oemsetup.ini ??? or somesuch file is
- different, as was not provided with the PB, because it was obtained sans
- windows). A default 640x256, 16 color driver in Win 3.1 worked, but the
- PB had given nice 800x600, 256 color and 1024x768, 16 color with Win 3.0,
- using existing PB drivers (manual install, if I recall)!!!
-
- A call to PB Technical Service 800 # was unhelpful. Techie there said "use
- any driver packaged with Win 3.1 that has the desired resolution." Nonsense,
- but I tried it anyway with no luck.
-
- Query to a Microsoft-related newsgroup produced a suggestion to get "parad31"
- drivers, the Win 3.1 drivers for Paradise chipset (which the PB seems to have).
- The parad31 drivers (Western Digital) did a bit better, because the 640x480,
- 256 color screen became usable under Win 3.1, but the higher resolutions are
- still unavailable; they are in parad31, but do not work on the PB.
-
- The questions:
- 1) Is there a way to fake Win 3.1 setup into accepting the old PB drivers
- that worked nicely under Win 3.0?
-
- 2) Is there a way to get the parad31 higher resolution drivers working on
- the Packard Bell implementation of the Paradise chipset?
-
- 3) Is there a PB version of the high res. drivers (800x600,256 color and
- 1024x768, 16 or 256 color) around?
-
- Any help appreciated. Thank you. - oldroyd@wucs1.wustl.edu
