- Loads of misconceptions. Are you sure what you want is EXTENDED
- memory and not EXPANDED memory? If what you want is extended memory,
- you don't have to do anything. The memory on a 386 or better machine
- is automatically extended.
-
- Now, on to what else seems wrong here. SMARTDRV has nothing to do
- with MEMORY, except for using it. It is a DISK CACHE. EMM386 and
- SMARTDRV have absolutely zero functionality in common. EMM386 is a
- memory manager to let you use extended memory as XMS or EXPANDED
- memory. The reason you didn't find any extended memory when you had
- SMARTDRV loaded was that SMARTDRV had all of it for use as a disk
- cache. Windows and SMARTDRV work together, so that SMARTDRV will
- release memory to Windows if Windows needs it (and with only 2 MB on
- your machine, trust me, Windows needed it).
-
- Frankly, I can't believe you're running Windows on a machine with only
- 2 MB of memory. Sure, it's possible, but that just doesn't strike me
- as enough memory to DO anything with.
-
- >Also, I heard QMM is better than EMM386. Anyone know?
-
- QEMM (note the 'E'), by QuarterDeck Office Systems, is a much better
- memory manager. It replaces the combination of HIMEM and EMM386. It
- is much more configurable, which means that it gives you more memory
- to play with, but that also means that it's harder to set up
- correctly. Also, it seems that Microsoft has a penchant for changing
- things slightly as they release new versions of things. Usually the
- change is just enough to break all the third party stuff like QEMM and
- DR-DOS.
