  11. I unfortunately purchased an UltraStor 14F SCSI host adapter. I say
  12. unfortuantely because although the hardware appears to be built
  13. rather well, I would *NOT* recommend anyone buying either the 14F
  14. (the AT/ISA bus version) or the 24F (the EISA bus version; I had
  15. one of these also) because:
  16.  
  17.    1.  UltraStor does not provide device driver support for IBM
  18.        OS/2 2.0.  I was told by UltraStor at the time I purchased
  19.        their product (February 1992) that they would provide
  20.        support for OS/2 2.0 at its G.A. time.  To put it simply,
  21.        they lied.  They still do not have OS/2 2.0 driver support
  22.        and as of last week, they still will not commit to any
  23.        future availability dates.  It doesn't look likely that
  24.        they will do any better in the NT area.

  26.    2.  I have encountered bugs in the code residing in the ROM
  27.        on the 14F.  Although they acknowledged the bugs, they
  28.        have not offered any fixes nor do they have any form of
  29.        a policy regarding ROM upgrades/replacements.

  31.    3.  The 24F EISA host adapter has timing problems.  It took
  32.        three different 24F's before I got one that worked with
  33.        an AMI Enterprise II EISA system board.

  35.    4.  I currently own a NEC CDR84 CD-ROM drive.  I cannot get
  36.        it to work with the UltraStor 14F at all.  UltraStor's
  37.        technical support was less than useful.  They said they
  38.        knew of "problems with CD-ROMs", but offered no other
  39.        help or solutions.

  41. I now use Adaptec SCSI host adpaters in both my AT/ISA bus and
  42. EISA bus machines.  They work great!  Device driver support is
  43. there for OS/2, DOS, and NT.  Corel has a pretty good package
  44. of ASPI interfacing drivers for practically every kind of SCSI
  45. periperhal - and it works in both the DOS and OS/2 environments.
  46. There is a "combo" package available now called the SCSI Master
  47. Plus which includes an Adaptec 1542B and the Corel software.

  49. I guess you can tell I am sold on Adaptec.  They have become the
  50. defacto SCSI adapter standard.  Good Luck!
