- I'm about to order the preliminary NT SDK, am going to have to order
- some hardware to go with it, and am currently agonizing over several
- messages I've seen here that indicate I might have more troubles than
- I bargained for. Help!
-
- I'm using a Gateway 486/50 ISA-bus PC with 16MB of RAM. It has a 320MB
- SCSI drive (Maxtor, I think) connected to an UltraStor 14F 16-bit
- SCSI-2 controller. (I believe the EISA-based Gateway 486/50 also uses
- an UltraStor SCSI adapter, but a different model - one that handles EISA
- bus connections.) The PC also has dual Bernoulli drives connected to a
- Bernoulli SCSI controller (which has a special connector on it - there
- appears to be no way to connect either my Bernoulli drives to the
- UltraStor 14F adapter or my hard disk to the Bernoulli adapter).
- I have no CD-ROM drive at the moment, and will have to purchase one.
-
- I see two problems, here. Neither the UltraStor 14F nor the Bernoulli
- SCSI adapter is on the current NT compatibility list, and a recent
- message here stated that the current version of NT does not support
- multiple SCSI adapters.
-
- 1) Has anybody tried adding a CD-ROM to an UltraStor 14F adapter?
- The UltraStor SCSI adapter shipped with the EISA version of the
- Gateway 486/50? What are the odds that this would work?
-
- 2) Has anybody tried running NT using an UltraStor 14F adapter? Any
- version of UltraStor SCSI adapter?
-
- 3) If I ordered an NT-compatible CD-ROM complete with its own (NT-
- compatible) SCSI controller, moved the Maxtor hard disk over to
- it, and set aside the UltraStor 14F, would that work? Would I lose
- the files that are currently on the Maxtor in the process? (Trust
- me - I'll back that puppy up first in any case <grin>)
-
- 4) (and I realize that the folks who are able to answer this question
- may not be allowed to answer it just now) What are the odds that the
- current "single SCSI controller" limit will be lifted by the next
- release of the SDK? Are my Bernoulli drives doomed?
-
- (The first porting effort will be to port our freeware Winfract
- fractal generator over to the NT environment.)
