- Help needed urgently!
-
- Against my advice, a friend of mine attempted to install Stacker 2.0 on his
- office computer. The key word is "attempted", in that Stacker never
- completed the installation, saying that it was unable to run the INSTALL2
- program. I suspect that the problem may be related to his vintage 1.0 AMI
- BIOS, but that's not the problem he's concerned with right now.
-
- The problem is that what Stacker HAS done so far is to compress all of his
- files into the STACVOL.DSK file, deleting the uncompressed files as it went.
- From a superficial standpoint (ie. doing a DIR /h command), the drive
- looks like it should with Stacker...the stacker files, the STACVOL.DSK file,
- the DOS files, etc. The only problem is that Stacker refuses to mount the
- STACVOL.DSK file, stating that it is "too fragmented" to be mounted. The
- STACVOL.DSK file itself is not fragmented (according to Norton's), so this
- must have something to do with the internal structure of the STACVOL.DSK
- file. However, since it can't be mounted, SCHECK and SDEFRAG refuse to
- look at the STACVOL.DSK file.
-
- The Stacker 2.0 manual doesn't mention (at least I can't find it) anything
- about this type of situation (ie. too fragmented to mount); I've been
- unable to get anything from Stac technical support yet.
-
- Short of reformatting and restoring everything (which he'd prefer not to do,
- since, as Murphy's Law dictates, there was one directory that wouldn't fit
- on his backup disks that he decided not to worry about), does anybody
- have any suggestions as to how to convince Stacker to mount this file as
- a drive?
-
- Thanx...
