- Is there a real problem with the longer filenames on the ftp sites, or
- is it just a misunderstanding of some sort? I never worried about the
- long names for the GCC files, and didn't have the slightest trouble.
-
- Adhering to DOS filename restrictions for files on FTP sites is not a
- good idea. Not only can't you have several dots (which would require us
- to use some unusual extension instead of .tar.Z, for instance), but you
- would have to make _certain_ that all files are unique to the first 8
- chars (the extension is usually not particularly useful).
-
- Personally, if I have to move files via a DOS disk, I first put them
- into a tar file with a DOS-convenient name, even if they are tar files
- themselves to start with. Works pretty well.
