- I've seen people mention that it takes 48 minutes or so to compile the
- kernel, so I decided to find out how long my machine takes.
-
- COMPILE TIME
- ------------
-
- The computer is a 386SX-25 with 8 MB of RAM and 89 MB (16 ms) IDE drive,
- running Linux 0.97-patch4. Only one user (root) was logged in, and there
- were no cron jobs or background processes running. Compile time was
- 24 minutes for "make Image". "make clean" and "make dep" were already
- done. Kernel was compiled without SCSI support.
-
- ANOTHER MATH COPROCESSOR QUESTION
- ---------------------------------
-
- I have seen several people mention that adding a coprocessor will
- make a big improvement to the performance of a 386 SX, but that all
- depends on how much floating point is used. Does GCC use floating
- point? Or, more specifically, will my programs compile faster if I
- add a coprocessor to this computer? It seems that I spend more time
- compiling stuff than anything else lately. :-)
-
- A PLEASANT SURPRISE
- -------------------
-
- Something else I noticed: I installed Linux on that computer about
- three weeks ago and the floppy disk gave me an unexpected interrupt at
- boot time. Linux was also unable to determine the FDC type. Now the
- unexpected interrupt is gone and Linux can determine the FDC type. :-)

- RE: MBR
- -------
-
- Following the instructions posted by Mika and Werner, I was able to
- replace the MS-DOS MBR with the LILO one. Sure enough, it had the
- features that I liked from the Coherent MBR, but it had still another
- feature that I liked: LILO asks for you to type in a name that
- represents the partition to boot. With Coherent, it was just that
- boring, strict, impersonal partition number. Great job!
