- | performance... and the ability to later pop in an 'overdrive chip' and
- | have a 486dx2/100...
- |
- | Of course, prices are still falling rapidly... so you might want to wait a
- | few months...
-
- a) Intel has not promised the 50/100, nor delivered many of the 33/66
- chips. I wouldn't hold my breath until you get this upgrade. I bought a
- 33 to be able to use the 33/66 chip, but it may be a year before you can
- buy the chip without a computer around it. Of course I might know
- someone, but the average person isn't going to do that.
-
- b) If you're into waiting you could hold out for the P5 chip, that will
- finally ship right after Linux 2.0.
-
- In my opinion the time to buy a computer is when you need it and have
- the money. Price will always go down, performance will always go up, and
- there's little reason to think that this will change.
-
- Also remember that some vendors will lie about when they are going to
- ship that new faster chip, just to keep you from buying a faster
- competitor's chip. Others will just be optimists about delivery and
- still not meet ship dates, and a few others will actually ship what and
- when they promise. All this makes waiting for new chips a real gamble.

- I admit that when I was in school I wrote COBOL. But I didn't compile.
