- Last night I acquired some more experiences with 0.97pl4,
- and during recoving of my corrupted Filesystem because of
- using strip from the gcc-2.2.2d distribution (Linus said
- this is a probable cause of FS-corruption under 0.97pl1),
- I tarred parts of the contents of a minix partition on
- my msdos partition.
-
- Under 0.97pl4 I noticed a BIG LOSS of access speed of the
- msdos filesystem by a factor of about 8 !!!!
- This first happend to me when checking an archive with
- "tar -vtf" and I'v verified the problem with a simple "cp".
- Under 0.97pl1 there's no real difference in access speed
- between minix and msdos partitions, but under 0.97pl4
- there is a factor of 8. When checking with "ps", all
- the time is accounted to the "cp" process.
-
- To me it looks like a problem in buffer handling; when I
- "tar -vtf" off the msdos-partition, the screen output
- starts off with the same speed as from a minix partition,
- but it slows down after some 100Kbytes.
-
- When copying under 0.97pl1 or only between minix filesystems,
- there is a permanent and fast harddisk access, but under pl4
- when reading off an msdos partition, the harddisk seems to be
- pausing every few seconds. :-(
-
- My setup: i486/33/20MB/200MB AT-Bus
- (+ ATI Graphics Ultra where Xlinux.8514 has some problems under pl4,
- and I must admit, I measured from within an xterm, but I don't
- think this is the reason for the pl4 slowdown for msdos partitions)
