- Yesterday (Monday) I pulled over the root and boot images from tsx-11
- and tried to use them to install Linux on my hard disk at home.
- I had a number of problems:
-
- i) The screen would not scroll. I had to keep on switching between virtual
- consoles to see the updates.
-
- ii) The calculation of blocks given by fdisk was wrong. This caused a very
- serious (and disturbing) grounching noise as my disk attempted to seek
- to sectors it doesn't have.
-
- Any ideas?
-
- More info:
-
- 0) bootimage-0.97
- rootimage-0.97.1
-
- i) I have a 386 dx with 2Meg, a 256k VGA card which is doing EGA emulation
- in firmware for my EGA monitor.
- The "Loading..." stuff was fine (since I assume that goes through the
- BIOS). I then got a message asking me to press return for SVGA
- modes or any other character to continue.
- Upon pressing (eg) space-bar, a "EGAc" is written to the top right hand
- corner of the screen. It then gives loads of diagnostic info
- (serial board type, no ptys, etc) underneath the prompt (where you
- would expect it), but not scrolling when it reaches the bottom of
- the display.
- (Upon hitting return a number of times and judicious ALT-F1, ALT-F2
- sequences I get to see the rest and the login prompt.)
- Upon login the problem (of not scrolling continues).
- (Once it managed to write some of the diagnostic info to the wrong
- virtual console. By this stage I was switching consoles _very_
- frequently.)
-
- If I hit return (to see the SVGA modes) the screen would go blank
- and after banging return a number of times I would eventually get
- something that resembles EGA graphics mode. The only problem
- was that a "line" started in about the middle of the screen, and
- only the top 8 lines would scroll.
- Eventually it just appears to stop outputting.
-
- Also always whilst attempting to discover the type of serial board
- (16450) it gets an NMI.
-
-
- ii) Fdisk states that my disk has 977 cylinders of 17 sectors
- (of 512 bytes) and five heads.
- An example of it getting the number of blocks wrong is:
- start at cylinder 4, end at 975.
- Fdisk claims this is 41395 1k blocks. Actually it is
- 41310.
-
- (Originally I had the partition ending at 977. and so the extra
- cylinder made mkfs a bit too exciting.)
