- I have successfully installed Linux on a 486 computer, however after the '#' prompt I
- do not know what to do: - it's not me not knowing anything about unix - but rather the
- lack of software on my computer.
-
- I have a number of basic questions - some of which are explained in the faq's but not
- in a way that I would understand the answers. Thus here are my questions:
-
- 1. I have installed the bootmanager from OS/2 (ok,ok) it works fine except in the case
- when I chose to boot from my linux primary partition - it then reports 'missing
- operating system'. Booting from floppy works fine. I have read in the faq that
- in order to boot directly from hard disk, I must re-compile the kernel, is this
- true, and if so, how do I get a compiler on my system. Once the compiler is on
- my system, how do I compile the kernel?
-
- -> Q.1 How can I boot from hard disk using OS/2 bootmanager ?
- -> Q.2 Where can I get a compiler from (ftp-address + login &
- password please) ? And how (and where) do I install it ?
- -> Q.3 How can I compile the kernel ?
-
- 2. I wish to install X.11, again, what do I need and where do I get the sources from?
-
- 3. I have a 3.5" floppy as drive A: and a 5.25" floppy as drive B: how can I mount
- the second floppy?
-
- I know these are very basic questions for most of you. However, IF I know the
- FTP servers I can get the stuff onto my UNIX machine.
- But when, how and where must I untar or unzip the files.
- Also, how do I copy it to a floppy - using rawrite! OK, but how - with or
- without the .tar or .Z ?
- Now how do I get the software onto my system and where does it go. How do I compile
- it and also what parameters are needed?
-
- Please help me.... I am willing to learn, but I would
- need someone to write down some of the basic procedures,
- I can alway find out about the commands in a UNIX book,
- BUT I have not found any literature that explains how
- to compile the kernel or where which files go.
