- Well this is a hardware error. My "first guess" is that one of your
- SIMMs is failing. Since the failing address ends in 3 or 5 or B, an odd
- address, it is one of two SIMMs for bits 8-15(+p). But which two of the
- four SIMMs handle those bits?
-
- My suggestions are:
-
- 1) Label each SIMM, A, B, C, D. It will help you keep track of
- which SIMM is which.
-
- 2) Make sure that each SIMM is seated correctly in its socket.
-
- Test, if it runs correctly you are done, if not then:
-
- 3) Since you have "two banks of SIMMs", remove the 2nd bank (pair)
- of SIMMs and run with only 2 Meg.
-
- Test, if it runs correctly, one of the two "2nd bank" SIMMs
- is suspect, goto 4.
- If the system still fails, one of the two "1st bank" SIMMs
- still in the system is suspect, goto 5.
-
- 4) System runs, so install "2nd bank" SIMMs for "1st bank" SIMMs.
-
- (We are expecting the system to fail.)
- Test, and if the system does fail use one of the "1st bank" SIMMs
- to swap out one of the installed "2nd bank" SIMMs one at time until
- the suspect SIMM is found.
-
- If the system runs correctly with 2 Meg no matter what,
- the possibilities are:
-
- 1) Install 4 Meg again, and change order of chips and to
- see ifyou can get failing address to change:
- SIMMs were in sequence ABCD, try BCDA, CDAB, etc
- and try to isolate the problem that way.
- 2) MAKE sure that all four SIMMs are the same speed and
- if that doesn't help get four SIMMs are made by the
- same manufacturer.
- 2) Could be a bad SIMM socket.
- 3) Could be a bad motherboard.
- (and see last comment under 5.)
-
- 5) System failed, so swap out one of the installed "1st bank" SIMMs
- one at time using one on the "1st bank" SIMMs until the suspect
- SIMM is found.
-
- If the system still fails with 2 Meg, no matter what.
- I would say that there is a memory timing problem with
- the motherboard that "only" Coherent can force. Sorry.
-
-
- Hope this helps and let me know what happens,
-
- Greg
