Let me be more specific.  (And perhaps a bit rude :-)
There is no support for 2.4dev versions.  In fact, often
2.4dev versions wouldn't even run.  2.4dev17 was very
EARLY in the 2.4 development, over a year ago, as such
MUCH has changed, and I have no idea if
1. The code then was correct, or for that matter, that
section you are referring to was even finished, or in
transition with only part of it changed.

My recommendation, is to DUMP 2.4devPL17, either return
to 2.3PL11 or wait the two weeks or so for 2.4 to be released.

3.0 WILL NOT be soon, it has not even been started, nor will
it until 2.4 is 'stable'  I would expect 3.0 in 1994.
