-
- I'm assuming you mean _playback_ a rayshade animation in realtime,
- as Rayshade does not output individual frames anywhere near realtime.
-
- But, if that's really what you meant, the getx11 program (mentioned
- below) will sit on a pipe and paint data onto the screen of
- your choice almost as fast as it gets it.
-
- Usually, Rayshade renders into RLE (Utah Raster Toolkit) files.
- If you're using an X11 workstation, URT's getx11 program supports
- animating the Rayshade files at whatever speed your hardware will support.
-
- Unfortunately, since we are talking about X here, you need to
- load the entire animation into X server memory. If it doesn't
- fit, your animation's frame rate will suffer as getx11 loads
- frames from disk.
-
-
- I'm not sure what frame rate you would consider real-time playback.
-
- If you want a subjective datapoint, I've had very nice results
- using a 17" NCD color terminal driven by a DEC 5000. In fact,
- we watched 3 days worth of data on Hurricane Andrew and it
- was truly impressive.
-
- If you want another subjective datapoint, playback to the local
- framebuffer on a high-end RS/6000 (sorry, don't know the model #)
- is 'kick-ass'.
