- Animation kicks ass. But computer animation rules the world. This
- is a great idea for a newsgroup, it just needs some people to write
- in once in a while.
-
- To get things started I will just go over some of my favorite animation
- tricks. Here at UW Madison I can make good little animations on
- Macintosh, IBM, and SG platforms. You do not have to have the most
- hi tech equipment in the city to learn the stuff. My favorite low
- budget trick lately is making animations with Adobe Photoshop. The
- idea is to take your base picture and incrementally move the parts around
- saving all the frames on your HD. After about 40 pictures you run them
- all thru a program called Pacoacker, which compresses them and makes
- the series into a self playing application.
-
- My second favorite thing lately is the animations being sent over the
- Internet on the alt.binaries.pictures.erotic newsgroups. So far they
- are mostly IBM animations that you need an executable called aaplay
- in order to play them at work. I think there should be a seperate
- newsgroup for sending out the big animations for public consumption.
-
- As for the hi tech stuff, I am fortunate enough to have a Silicon Graphics
- running Alias, and WalkThru software here at the Graphics Lab. A partner
- and I spent the entire last year accurately modeling the campus on
- a microstation CAD program, we then bring it to the SG to make some
- kick ass videos. As for Alias I will not go into how kick ass that
- program is, but it will surely take at least a good year to learn how
- to use it even close to its full potential.
-
- If anyone has any info on SG programs that import CAD files for walkthru
- purposes or making animations with the new Mathmatica post or write
- me back at jtojek@cae.wisc.edu
-
- Try and get some posts going here.
