  27. Many universities have their phone lists available through wais 
  28. (UNC does, for instance), so if the person you are looking for
  29. is at enlightened university :), you may be lucky.

  32. supplied directory, not faculty directories and such.

  34. But, unless you're just curious about this sort of thing, this is the
  35. sort of thing that old fashioned tools (like the phone company's
  36. directory service) are suited to.

  38. Uh-uh, don't go limiting it.  I'm sure a few years ago many people
  39. said exactly that about making airline reservations.

  41. An idea I had, but never followed through with, was to approach
  42. leading carriers (Bell Atlantic, Pacific Bell, NYNEX, etc) about
  43. making their directories accessible over the Internet.  It would
  44. probably involve creating search software (WAIS isn't well-suited to
  45. the kinds of lookups necessary for normal directory assistance), as
  46. well as convincing upper management that it would be in their best
  47. interest.  (Doing so in an area where there's a per-call charge for
  48. directory assistance would be uniquely difficult, though.)

  50. Another problem would be abuse of the system, by doing mass searches
  51. for "everyone named Mary," or using it for destructive purposes.
  52. Those issues would have to be properly addressed, as well.

  54. To use an example from my own experience, I began investigating what
  55. might be needed for Bell of PA to make such a thing available on
  56. PrepNet.  I didn't get too far (it was more of a problem of "who do I
  57. talk to?" than being turned away).  Perhaps someone else, with better
  58. resources, might find their attempts more fruitful than I.
