  31.     Sportster = crippled Courier HST Dual Standard?  Perhaps.
  32. When I saw the first post on this, I thought it must be a hoax, 
  33. but the rumors continued so I tried it.  For what it is worth,
  34. it appears to work for my internal Sportster 14400/FAX modem
  35. which was purchased less than two weeks ago;  I don't know if it 
  36. will work on yours.

  38.      FAIR WARNING: The magic GW commands apparently patch the modem's 
  39. software; it may be possible to damage the modem this way. If you 
  40. decide to try this, PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

  42.      Below is a transcript of 
  43.           - what my  Sportster reports from the inquiry ("ATIn") 
  44.             commands; 
  45.           - an attempt to connect to an HST modem - successful at 
  46.             2400bps as expected;
  47.           - the magic words, as I pulled them off the net, that are 
  48.             supposed to perform the metamorphosis; 
  49.           - a second attempt to connect with an HST - successful
  50.             at 14400bps;
  51.           - and finally, the changed output from the "ATIn" commands of
  52.             my Sportster which now reports itself as an (ersatz?) 
  53.             "USRobotics Courier 16800 HST Dual Standard."  
  54.  
  55.      Even the modem's online help screens change to reflect a
  56. variety of commands and features that aren't normally available
  57. to the Sportster, such as four phone number slots instead of
  58. one, and X0-X7 instead of just X0-X4.
