- I've got an ancient USRobotics Courier 2400e modem (the kind that only did
- up to MNP3). This unit has always exhibited a problem with MNP connections
- where it will work fine for a little while, but then randomly die by spewing
- garbage out as received data. The garbage resembles data received
- immediately prior to the crash but is somewhat garbled, and repeats
- incessantly - about 1K worth, possibly less. The modem is configured for
- RTS/CTS and a 19.2Kbps local link rate, although it happened when used at a
- variable baud rate. On my XT, telemate will be unable to keep up with the
- garbage, will try to throttle the modem with RTS/CTS, and eventually lose
- the connection. My Sun 3/60 is a little faster, and manages to keep up with
- the garbage. I have never let it run more than a minute before
- power-cycling the modem, so I do not know if it would also eventually hang
- up.
-
- This seems to be a firmware problem. Disabling MNP (&M0) works but is
- highly undesirable as it leads to other problems.
-
- It was never a terrible inconvenience until recently, when the University
- picked up a rackful of cheap MNP modems, which cause a failure relatively
- quickly about 50% of the time and a failure immediately about 30% of the
- time. Does anybody know if USR has an upgrade ROM or can upgrade this unit
- to a newer version? I sent USR a letter about six months ago and never
- received a reply.
-
- E-mail replies are preferable, as I read this group weekly, and news expires
- rather faster than that.
