- I just bought one (the external) and have no problems with it. I have
- connected with MICC and Multitech at 14.4Kbps with no problems. I have also
- connected at 9600bps with an unknown modem type, but had to force the
- Forval to 9600bps. The auto-negotiation mode gave up, so had to force it.
- The 9600bps modem must be an older type, since it does not have V.42/V.42bis.
- It has MNP.
-
- Juicy gossip:
- I have read on RIME net that Forval will soon no longer be selling the
- modems. The Forval modems are actually made by Intelligent Modems Inc.,
- and sold under the Forval name. In the future, IMC will no longer sell
- them through Forval. (I suspect that is the reason for the current sale
- price of $275 for internal or external.) But IMC will still make them and
- support the Forvals as well. Forvals are still supposed to be supported by
- IMC, as they currently are.
-
- Updates/Upgrades:
- Updates (bug fixes) are FREE.
- Upgrades (new features):
- FAX upgrade due this year and will be FREE.
- Forval unique 19.2Kbps rate due within 90 days for $100.
- V.FAST is supposed to be achievable when spec is finished for $???
-
- Both types are accomplished by calling the factory BBS and putting the
- modem in a special mode to update it. No PROM to replace, so update must
- be to EEPROM or battery-backed SRAM ( I don't know which).
-
- I have read that some people have lost updates/upgrades, probably due to
- powering modem up/down. If they leave them on, no problem. This is not
- catastrophic, as the original code is in PROM, and is not lost - you just
- lose the updates. I haven't had any experience with this, since I haven't
- updated - I have the latest revision in PROM.
