  23. Modems are a complete rip-off in Europe.  Even the 'cheapest' v32bis,
  24. Twincom, is 300pounds (ex tax 17.5%) - $600.  Precisely double the
  25. cost in the US.  I've just been looking through PCW for an advert
  26. I saw the other day for one of the bigger names - it was something
  27. like 450 pounds.  Unbelievable.

  29. So import from the US.  With the dollar as low as it is just now,
  30. buy a handful of modems, keep one for spares and sell the rest
  31. to your friends at 20% profit - it'll pay for your postage etc,
  32. everyone will be happy, and you'll still be much cheaper than
  33. buying one in Europe.

  35. Wonder how long it'll be before customer pressure drives prices down?
  36. Never, I guess, unless computing magazines expose this greed which
  37. they'll never do because they need the advertising :-(
