- As many of you probably already know from previous posts requesting
- information, I'm planning to spend a good chunk (read 80-90%) of my
- non-university funds to purchase a ZyXEL U-1496S on the basis that it
- should be capable of some sort of v.fast in the future (up to the DTE limit
- of 76.8kbps). I like all of it's other features and I know for sure that
- they exist already. Just about 2 days before I was planning to order (on a
- Saturday) I received a post talking about the U-1496S+. I held off
- ordering because I was curious what this model was. I was told that this
- was *_THE_* model that ZyXEL was planning to upgrade to v.fast (along with
- the E+). What I need is some straight answers about the existence of this
- modem. After my inquiries about the product I have received two basic
- answers (each received from several people) : 1) the plus model is a new
- hardware product with new custom ASICs (Application Specific Integrated
- Circuits) to allow the full speed of v.fast plus other neato things (like
- voicemail etc...) 2) that the + model is a normal ZyXEL modem shipped
- with a new, special ROM revision that is also publicly available for $50 or
- so (this is what is advertised by a "distributor", the Questor Project).
-
- Which answer is correct? I don't need to know every detail about
- new hardware or new firmware features, only whether I should wait for new
- hardware to hit the market or whether I can just buy a current 1496S and I
- will get a "PLUS" model later in ROM. This is a major purchase for me and
- I don't want to screw it up by purchasing 3 weeks too early. E-Mail or
- post, I read all articles in this newsgroup. Thanks in advance,
-
