CALL FOR PAPERS
End-System Support for High Speed Networks
A Special Issue of the IEEE Network Magazine
We have seen significant increases in the bandwidth available for computer
communication networks in the recent past. We have commercially available Local
Area Networks operating at 100 Mbits/sec and research networks operating at
greater than 1 Gbit/sec. A variety of network architectures for the Local area,
Metropolitan area and Wide area networks have been proposed to take advantage ofthe high speed transmission capabilities. Processor speeds have also seen
dramatic increases at the same time. The perception is that end-user
applications which can use this high bandwidth will grow rapidly in the near
future. Network I/O at the end-system may be the next bottleneck.
The purpose of this special issue of IEEE Network Magazine is to address the
issues in providing support in the end-system for computer networks. We would
like to see papers that are tutorial in nature addressing lessons learned
in host implementations for computer networks, as well as innovative
approaches to provide host support for emerging high speed networks. Topics
of interest include, but are not restricted to:
- Implementation of Communication Protocols in End-Systems
- Operating System Support for Communications
- Host Architecture Issues (e.g., Workstation architecture) for
enabling support of high bandwidth communications
- Network Interface Design and Implementation
- Novel ideas in protocol design to ease end-system support of
high speed networks
- Novel application design and implementation
Contributions: Please submit 4 copies of the complete manuscript to the guest
editor. Papers should not exceed 20 double spaced pages, and should
include an informative abstract. Please include the author's names, contact
address, phone number and if possible, e-mail address. Deadline for initial
paper submission is January 15, 1993. (Authors outside the US who need
a little extra time are encouraged to contact the guest editor). The issue
