  12. I need Your help for choosing right configuration. It seems to me that
  13. Informix is right choise, but on our limited information I cannot
  14. figure out right configuration.
  15.  
  16. We are small newspaper (ca. 100 000 subscribers, biggest in Estonia).
  17. Our needs are usual accountig procedures, processing subscriptions and
  18. processing articles and advertisments. Currently some of this software
  19. is written in C using homemade libraries, some of it in foxpro. Some
  20. of it runs under unix, some under dos. Some of it is still
  21. unimplemented.
  22.  
  23. Now we are considering to rewrite it in uniform fashion both for dos
  24. and unix using some good database system. After all we have financal
  25. limitations about 3000$ for buying software (its big money for us,
  26. as average salary in estonia is about 50 dollars in month).

  28. Programs must run both on dos and SCO unix. (We have 3 unix machines
  29. and about 20 dos boxes). So far i have considered the following
  30. configuration:

  32. for unix
  33. - Informix Standard Engine
  34. - Informix 4GL Rapid Development System or ESQL/C
  35.  
  36. for dos
  37. - Informix NET-PC with Sun PC-NFS
  38.  
  39. Now i have some questions about abowe configuretions which i can't
  40. resolve due to my limited informationt.
  41.  
  42. - is Informix NET all what we need for dos, can we run applications
  43.   produced in unix by 4GL-RDS on dos or we must buy separate products
  44.   for dos?
  45. - if something more is needed, what and why?
  46. - what are advantages of 4GL-RDS against ESQL/C (its much cheaper, and
  47.   its realy important for us)
  48. - does ESQL/C include libraries for menu, forms, ... creation (of
  49.   course there remains possibility to write them in C) 
  50. - does the Standard Engine include recovery possibilities ?
