  13. Teddy Nishiyama and Michael Walz both asked questions about a database
  14. system called db_VISTA and needed some additional information.

  16. Were presently embarking on writing a new database system to manage clinical
  17. data from a large number of cancer research studies. Our present system is a
  18. heirarchical MIIS-MUMPS system written by Marc Serber at Memorial Sloan-
  19. Kettering Cancer Center in the late 70s and modified by us over the past 12
  20. years. The system is fast and efficient, but our Data Genl MV-7800/XP 
  21. machine is getting old and its time to move on. Weve settled on using
  22. Raimas db_VISTA after quite a bit of soul-searching. OSU has recently chosen
  23. Sybase as the university-wide standard database, but the costs (direct and
  24. indirect) are relatively high.

  26. Dick Gams, our director of Drug Development, has used db_VISTA in the past
  27. to manage clinical data for Adria Laboratories. You might wish to drop him
  28. a note on Compuserve (70720,1777) if youd like more info from a developer.

  30. Raima db_VISTA (now designated Raima) is a database management system using
  31. a combination of network and relational database models. Raima is written in
  32. C and may be ported to many operating systems including MS Windows, OS/2, Unix,
  33. Xenix, and VAX VMS giving you a wide range of hardware options. The system
  34. features such things as LAN and multi-user computer support, client-server
  35. architecture, transaction processing/logging, a SQL-based ad hoc query
  36. system, and database security functions.

  38. Raima [db_VISTA] is NOT FREE. Multiple user licenses are not terribly
  39. expensive, and as is true with any system, the cost of the software is
  40. minimal compared to the cost of your commitment to support it. If you need
