-
- Well, I'm not going to vote or flame because I don't think there's much
- point. However, I too was a little irked by the announcement which
- did reek a little of profiteering to this authors nose.
-
- I also feel that PKware over-estimate the importance and popularity of
- pkzip/pkunzip, given that it is essentially only a MS-DOS product.
- (Yes, I know the INFO-Zip software is cross-platform, but we're
- talking PKware here.) Most unix users I know still happily use tar
- and compress, most Atari ST users ZOO or LHA, and so on. Even on
- MS-DOS, the pkzip heartland, many I know are jumping ship (as I did)
- to ARJ because they feel it is superior in features and compression
- compared to pkzip [1.1]. (And you don't have to register it for "home"
- use.)
-
- I would like to see ARJ become more widespread to other platforms.
- Unfortunately, with no source code available to the general public,
- this is unlikely to happen (quickly at least). Such a pity.
-
- I guess if PKware are determined to become a standard, even if only
- on MS-DOS, and drop the shareware image, I guess that they'd
- probably manage to pull it off. And a sad day that would be, IMHO.
- Lately "standards" seem to have become more a shackle to bind us
- rather than the liberating force they were originally destined to be. :-(
-
- Cheers,
-
- Paul.
