  12. I have a suggestion for a WWIV mod, and would like to hear from an "in the
  13. know" person for these sort of things...

  15. My system consists of a 286-16 with 1meg of RAM, 150meg HD, and two really
  16. old Hitachi CD-ROM drives.  Everything is working properly and has been
  17. tested thoroughly.  I recently tried installing WWIV 4.21 and have had a
  18. few concerns about how it handles its download directories.  From what I
  19. gather, each DL sub must have a cooresponding disk drive directory.  This
  20. is fine for my hard drive, but the CD-ROM disks are usually divided up
  21. into 30 or more directories.  Having a sub for directory will make over 60
  22. DL subs for my CD-ROM drives alone!  This really bites...

  24. However, I had an idea for changing the "uploadsrec" structure and the
  25. cooresponding support code to handle pathnames as well as filenames.  This
  26. would supercede the path entry in the DIRS.DAT file.  Now, I know this will
  27. make the .DIR files a bit larger, but heck, it won't be that bad!  This
  28. little change would allow you to keep files in multiple directories and just
  29. change their path in the subs' .DIR file to change their position.  It would
  30. make read-only and write-once devices much easier to use on WWIV.

  32. After perusing my friend's code, I don't think that it would be too diffi-
  33. cult to modify WWIV to support this since it seems pretty flexible.  However,
  34. I'm not that familiar with the code and it's not documented very well.
