  22. OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT - ESTABLISHMENT OF HKPA

  25. I would like to announce the second phase of re-structuring the various
  26. collections of Hong Kong related pictures in nok.lcs.mit.edu ftp site.
  27.  
  28. From now on, the whole collections of Hong Kong related pictures will
  29. be known as the HONG KONG PICTURES ARCHIVE (HKPA). The structure of HKPA
  30. is as follows:

  54. So there are 2 categories currently under HKPA:

  56. Hong Kong Pictures Archive - Popstar Collection (HKPA.POPSTARS)
  57. - in ftp directory /pub/hongkong/hkpa/popstars

  59. Hong Kong Pictures Archive - Scenic Collection (HKPA.SCENIC)
  60. - in ftp directory /pub/hongkong/hkpa/scenic
  61.  
  62. In addition, there is a generic archive called
  63. Hong Kong Pictures Archive - Miscellaneous Collection (HKPA.MISC)
  64. which accepts pictures of other un-specified categories.
  65.  
  66. HKPA.***** is called a subdivided archive.
  67.  
  68. Inside each subdivided archive, there are few special text files of
  69. informations. The common ones are the following:
  70.  
  71. HK****.index    List of pictures available in a subdivided archive
  72. README.DONORS   Rules and how to contribute pictures for a particular
  73.                 subdivided archive.
  74.  
  75. There are other information files for each subdivided archive. Both
  76. temporarily & permanently.

  78. Please note that HKPGCS is now replaced by HKPA.POPSTARS. The directory
  79. /pub/hongkong/gif in nok.lcs.mit.edu is now as /pub/hongkong/hkpa.

  83. The duplication of HKPA.POPSTARS file base is located in:

  88. This site is situated in Finland. Users in Europe are encouraged to obtain 
  89. pictures from nic.funet.fi, in order to reduce the net traffic in 
  90. nok.lcs.mit.edu.

  92. WHAT KIND OF PICTURES DOES HKPA WANTED & ARE THERE?
  93. ---------------------------------------------------
  94. Virtually all kinds, as long as it is related to Hong Kong. Pictures
  95. which aren't fitted into the existing subdivided archive will be put to
  96. HKPA.MISC.

  98. WAYS TO OBTAIN PICTURES FROM HKPA
  99. ---------------------------------
  100. 1) ftp access (by using the command "ftp". It's usually available if
  101.    your Unix/VMS account is connected to Internet.)
  102. 2) ftp mail server (which access ftp sites & get files for you; commands
  103.    are sent & files are received via email.) Use this service ONLY if
  104.    you don't have access to ftp in your account.
  105. 3) alt.binaries.pictures & alt.binaries.pictures.misc newsgroups (where
  106.    new incoming pictures are posted there.)

  108. REASON OF RE-STRUCTURING
  109. ------------------------
  110. The reason behind this re-structuring is to allow a more flexible and
  111. neat handling of any future expansions of this archive. Such as addition
  112. of a collection of another picture category. It is now in terms of
  113. establishing a new subdivided archive. The idea is similar to that in
  114. Usenet. i.e.: When someone wants to establish a new newsgroup. For HKPA,
  115. a volunteered organizer can assign a name for the new subdivided
  116. archive in the format of:
  117.  
  118. "Hong Kong Pictures Archive - <The name you want> (HKPA.<category title>)
  119.  
  120. It is best to bound as many terminologies as possible to one standard
  121. for all subdivided archives. Such as the format of documents (a header
  122. containing the standard archive name format in particular), the kind
  123. of information text files in the archive (at this moment HK****.index
  124. & README.DONORS are compulsory for all subdivided archives). This is
  125. to maintain the neatness & unity of HKPA.

  127. We apologise for the hardship of getting used to the new names HKPA &
  128. HKPA.****. However, it should be the time for us to get more organized
  129. as the collections become bigger.

  131. WHERE CAN I READ THE NEWS ON HKPA MATTERS?

  133. All news on HKPA including news on new pictures available are posted to
  134. soc.culture.hongkong. New pictures are also posted to alt.binaries.pictures
  135. and alt.binaries.pictures.misc, in multi part uuencoded form.
