  26. Several years ago Vanderbilt embarked on a long journey in which we tried
  27. to do exactly this using the BCL2 tape.  I couldn't hope to give the
  28. details here, but if enough interest, I could reconstruct our method.
  29. Simply, we used SAS to do a bunch of manipulations to the tape and then
  30. compare titles, some standard numbers, whatever we could think of, to
  31. eliminate dups with our database.  I cannot remember what out "hit" rate
  32. was, but we were able to provide our bibliographers with a listing of
  33. titles that Vanderbilt "did not" own.  We had many of these since we found
  34. no foolproof way to elimiante dups, but I think it was useful in the long
  35. run.  I was not aware that BCL3 had come out already.  Needless to say, I
  36. am not prepared for this ordeal again.  I always intended to write up our
  37. experiences with the last version but unfortunately never got around to it.

  39. to figure out what we did (it was soooooo long ago) and share.
