- Continuing the "first hands on" NB4.0 story, I have a few further queries
- about others' experiences:
-
- (a) Erratic production of "open new window or abandon": Despite my explicit
- instruction (in the Settings) to open a new window --always-- when requested,
- it sometimes does, and sometimes does not. I have not yet found when it
- refuses to do so. I checked NBCUSTOM.SET, which correctly gives NW=1 or
- NW=2, depending on whether you want a window closed after abandoning it.
- What could influence that particular setting? A bug?
-
- (b) Another thing I can't get off: I do not want hyphenation ON (e.g.
- when writing in other languages than English, the dictionary does not
- help to hyphen automatically). So, I turned hyphenation OFF, and indeed
- NBCUSTOM.SET correctly says HY=0. Fine. So, as expected, the *screen*
- doesn't hyphenate anymore, but alas, not so in *printing*. I checked
- the (adapted) printer driver, and see no special HY setting, so I add
- that (no protests during loading) but that doesn't work either. In
- review, the hyphen is there, nicely put between two MDNM's (which
- indeed seem to be everywhere in this review file (see expanded mode)
- --as Michael J writes: they seem to multiply like rabbits. Question:
- How can I get truly rid of hyphens I don't want, also while printing?
- (By the way, I also tried to add LDDICT in the startup file, which is
- what I had to do in NB3 to set hyphen off). Mysteries.
-
- The slow/fast effects of NB4 are suddenly disappeared. Strange. NB4
- occasionally seems to run slower, sometimes faster (checked that
- by automatically writing a file of 500 sentences with an XPL program:
- sometimes writing slows down... Why?).
-
- In sum, NB 4.0 is getting dear to me: It is like a person, full of
- quirks, moods and unexpected behavior. Does not feel like a program
- at all, or rather, it feels like a generation 6 program: just like
- a human being. Maybe it (she?) is really thinking behind that enticing
- dark blue screen?
