- Please excuse me if this is not the best place for this topic, but I can
- think of no better place to discuss it. On another list, questions regarding
- the capabilities and cost of Bitnet compared to Internet are being
- discussed. We at Temple University have our VM system hooked to both
- networks. This morning, I asked my director if its okay for me to spend time
- investigating this further with the possibility of me recommending to her
- that we drop Bitnet and stil retain our Internet access.
-
- We run a busy Listserv and have many active users who do only use email and
- other Bitnet and Internet services. We have a Unix system doing duty as our
- Usenet server. Soon, we will also have a readnews interface on this system
- and probably other Internet services such as Gopher and IRC. With that in
- mind, it seems hard to justify our continued involvement with Bitnet and
- there doesn't seem to be much reason to keep our Listserv going. A
- discussion with Eric Thomas on this issue earlier today via email did not
- help me justify keeping a Listserv here and no one has been able to offer any
- good reasons for Temple to keep its Bitnet access. Since Bitnet is an RSCS
- protocol and at home on VM systems, there must be other people on VMS systems
- out there dealing with this concern. What are your thoughts on this matter?
- Has any one out there dropped Bitnet and regretted it?
