- Recently I've been doing some consulting with a volunteer organization
- called Prasad, which has been doing many projects in India in the
- areas of family health, eye care, nutrition, clean water and education.
- They periodically put on one of the larger free eye camps in India,
- where cataract blindness causes extreme hardship for millions of
- people. They also run a mobile hospital & a milk distribution
- program, and consult in rural water development and appropriate
- energy technology and community development. Prasad is currently
- expanding to consider taking on projects of an educational or
- development nature in a variety of other countries.
-
- Much of what I suggested to them is that they would do well to use
- the internet to be in communication with and share resources with
- other volunteer organizations around the world.
-
- Naturally they wanted me to provide a listing of other groups or
- email forums and lists that they could or should contact.
-
- I can pick various potentially useful names off the global list
- of the internet, but really I don't know which ones are the
- most comprehensive and useful. As I thought about it, I realized
- than many others might be interested in a well annotated listing
- of the various volunteer type forums, resources and lists
- available via the internet directly and through Compuserve and
- privately administered email bulletin boards as well. It seems
- like students and teachers at various levels might be interested
- in having such information.
-
- Does anyone know if such a listing already exists? If not, if those
- of you who do follow such lists would give me your comments on them,
- I'll try to compile an initial version.
-
- I did recently pick up the book Ecolinking by Don Ritter, which I'm
- enjoying very much. But its emphasis is primarily ecology, and so
- it seems to miss many of the resources which might be relevant to
- people engaged in volunteer projects in general.
-
- Thanks for your input,
