- Regarding Cheryl Wissick's call for justification:
-
- Cheryl, I would mention to your administrators that the InterNet is such
- a powerful component of education at any level that no amount of staff
- development can match! I have seen cases where teachers became so
- turned on with the quantity of information at their disposal and the
- relative ease of locating this information that some were transformed
- into instructional dynamos at their local level. As a matter of fact,
- next week, one of these very educators is presenting a session at our
- statewide computer conference on the topic of the Internet and its
- effect on classroom instruction.
-
- Does your administration realize that some vocational journals are
- available for receipt electronically? As a former industrial arts
- (technology education) teacher, I can tell you that the official
- journal of the International Technology Education Association is
- transmitted electronically via the Internet. Others are, as well.
- For the business education types, the usenet newsgroup, k12.ed.business
- is a wonderful forum for discussion among teachers.
-
- I see just these few phases of the Internet to be well worth the
- cost. As a principal several years ago, I used to preach to the
- school board to try and understand the differentiation between
- "expenditure" and "investment." In both cases, you have an
- exchange of money. In the case of expenditure, you give your
- money to somebody for some type of goods or service and that
- person goes his/her merry way. However, when one invests,
- money is given to someone else, but the return on that exchange
- of money keeps on coming back over and over. Therefore, why
- would they NOT(!!) invest in the future of the students under
- their tutelage, all the while empowering both teachers and
- students? Who knows, they might even find out that there
- is such a thing as the discussion group "EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION"
- and they could receive answers on *their* problems?
-
- Several of the students I teach now at Mississippi State
- University read this list, so perhaps some of them will decide
- to contribute their own comments about the worth of the
- InterNet and its justification in the face of reformed
- instructional techniques.
