  15.         We are beginning to install networks throughout our institutions
  16.         and have decided on Pathworks. We have brought it up throughout
  17.         our Community College system and are in the process of doing so
  18.         at one of our campus based institutions.  After working with DEC
  19.         on what servers, software and licenses were needed we proceeded
  20.         with the above mentioned projects. We thought we had just about
  21.         all of our expenses covered when someone from DEC service contracts
  22.         called about our new agreement for the upcoming fiscal year and
  23.         he began talking about the requirement of buying Layered Product
  24.         Support for each and every desktop device (DOS or MAC) that we have
  25.         licensed for Pathworks.  This additional expense was never mentioned
  26.         in any of our many meetings with DEC concerning our networking plans
  27.         nor did it show up in any written proposals from our local DEC sales
  28.         office.  When these two networks are fully configured we will easily
  29.         have over 240 desktop devices networked. DEC tells me that it will
  30.         cost us $1550.00 per month to have the right to use the software on
  31.         that many workstations. I am sure there are networks out there that
  32.         have many more networked devices than that and if they buy LPS the
  33.         operational expense for the network must be astronomical!

  35.         My questions to the net are : Are other sites paying this? It seems that
  36.         this additional expense, over and above licensing, makes Pathworks
  37.         a prohibitivly expensive network solution even with the CSLG program
  38.         and educational discounting. What are the ramifications of not
  39.         carrying this service? Are there any DEC programs available to help
  40.         instiutions get a handle on such an ongoing fee?
