  10. THE GREAT LAKES INFORMATION SERVICE is now available for gopher access!

  12. Fact Sheets about various Great Lakes topics and issues, along with two
  13. years worth of new stories from the Great Lakes Reporter, can be found
  14. on the CICNet Gopher server in Michigan. Look for the great-lakes menu
  15. item, and then the cgl item under it. 
  16. You'll find a readme.txt file which explains
  17. and lists what's available in what subdirectory.

  19. Topics covered by Fact Sheets include Great Lakes water diversion, water
  20. quality, waterfront development, pollution prevention, regional and
  21. international agreements such as the Great Lakes Water QUality
  22. Agreement, and the effects of global warming on the Lakes.
  23. There are Fact Sheets on many of the 43 Great Lakes Areas of Concern,
  24. which are the worst toxic hotspots as designated by the two federal
  25. governments.

  27. The Great Lakes Reporter, a regional newsmagazine published by The
  28. Center for the Great Lakes, covers news, trends, and issues relating the
  29. environment of the Great Lakes ecosystem and the economy of the region,
  30. especially when they interact. You will find every major story that has 
  31. appeared in the Reporter since the start of 1990, listed by subject area
  32. with headlines for easy access and searching. Typical topics include
  33. coverage of the historic regional public meetings held in Traverse City
  34. in October 1991; trends in various key economic sectors around the
  35. Lakes; analysis of current water quality planning and activities by
  36. governments, industry and citizen's groups around the region; waterfront
  37. development aroound the Lakes; "invader" species such as the zebra
  38. mussel; the state and future of the Great Lakes' fishery; the status of
  39. proposals to divert Great Lakes water, and so forth.

  41. The Reporter is a part of the Great Lakes Information Service, a public
  42. service of The Center for the Great Lakes. This ftp access is the first
  43. step in a long-range plan to put the Information Service "on-line"; more
  44. Fact Sheets on more topics will be added, Reporter stories will be
  45. continuously added as they are published, existing Fact Sheets are
  46. periodically updated by Center researchers, and other useful and
  47. interesting things are being put on-line as we think of them
  48. (suggestions are welcome).
