-
- As usual, everything is true only by Ehud's definitions.
-
- DMConnection IS connected, with UUCP and all our clients ARE connected also.
- They just aren't DIRECTLY connected. For the VAST majority of applications
- direct connections aren't needed since "real time" response isn't (in general)
- a requirement. In any event [adequate] real time response can't be achieved
- over a WAN.
-
- Which bring me to the real crux of the matter: money. Considering the
- difference in price for an internet connection versus a UUCP connection most
- people who actually pay the bills (instead of simply using or managing
- connections) have to ask "What do I [my group, my company, ...] have to say
- that MUST be heard within 1-2 hours all over the world?" If the answer is
- nothing then UUCP is a MORE than adequate solution. If the answer is not much
- then UUCP is still probably the right answer. If the answer is "it depends"
- remember the telephone system, drop a dime instead of sending a mail message
- (or do both). If the answer is everything then purchase an internet connection
- and get it over with. But in all cases, match the solution to the problem!
- The internet isn't THE answer, it's just AN answer.
-
- Regarding Ehud's assertion about price comparison's between UUNET and
- DMConnection: if you examine the UUCP rate structures for both companies you
- will find that DMConnection is consistently less expensive, generally by a
- factor of 4 or more for low to moderate usage clients (This is especially
- true taking into account that DMConnection doesn't load our clients with a
- monthly fee that contains no communications costs.) Once usage gets above
- 8 hours/month DMConnection is still less expensive, but savings depend pretty
- dramatically on the volume of data.
-
- Of course, this isn't true for TCP/IP access to UUNET (last figures I have for
- them state $19/month, presumably with an additional $36/month for their
- carrying costs; I couldn't tell from their brochure) but then DMConnection
- isn't DIRECTLY connected [yet] so we can't offer that service.
-
- Once we are, we will provide equivalent access at competitive prices.
