  17. DMConnection IS connected, with UUCP and all our clients ARE connected also. 
  18. They just aren't DIRECTLY connected.  For the VAST majority of applications
  19. direct connections aren't needed since "real time" response isn't (in general)
  20. a requirement.  In any event [adequate] real time response can't be achieved
  21. over a WAN.

  23. Which bring me to the real crux of the matter: money.  Considering the
  24. difference in price for an internet connection versus a UUCP connection most
  25. people who actually pay the bills (instead of simply using or managing
  26. connections) have to ask "What do I [my group, my company, ...] have to say
  27. that MUST be heard within 1-2 hours all over the world?"  If the answer is
  28. nothing then UUCP is a MORE than adequate solution.  If the answer is not much
  29. then UUCP is still probably the right answer.  If the answer is "it depends"
  30. remember the telephone system, drop a dime instead of sending a mail message
  31. (or do both).  If the answer is everything then purchase an internet connection
  32. and get it over with.  But in all cases, match the solution to the problem! 
  33. The internet isn't THE answer, it's just AN answer.

  35. Regarding Ehud's assertion about price comparison's between UUNET and
  36. DMConnection: if you examine the UUCP rate structures for both companies you
  37. will find that DMConnection is consistently less expensive, generally by a
  38. factor of 4 or more for low to moderate usage clients (This is especially
  39. true taking into account that DMConnection doesn't load our clients with a
  40. monthly fee that contains no communications costs.)  Once usage gets above
  41. 8 hours/month DMConnection is still less expensive, but savings depend pretty
  42. dramatically on the volume of data.

  44. Of course, this isn't true for TCP/IP access to UUNET (last figures I have for
  45. them state $19/month, presumably with an additional $36/month for their
  46. carrying costs; I couldn't tell from their brochure) but then DMConnection
  47. isn't DIRECTLY connected [yet] so we can't offer that service.
