- Sometimes it can be instructive to compare experiences between different
- systems. I recently went over to Mervyn's (major department store). I applied
- for a credit card and in less than ten minutes I had a temporary card with
- a $500 limit plus a 15% discount certificate for being a new customer clutched
- in my hot little hands. I went and bought mucho merchandise.
-
- I told you that I have about $60 disposable income right? My computer has not
- yet been returned and I'm getting desperate for something cheap to do. So,
- I go down to the Monterey Public Library to apply for a library card.
- 45 minutes later I left with no card and no books. Still don't have one.
- The application for a library card was more than twice a long as the credit
- card application and it seems I could not prove residency to their satisfaction
- as I had just moved and all my mail was being forwarded, even though my
- last two residences are in the city limits (they actually get out the Thomas
- Guide and check).
-
- What losers!
-
- I move we privatise the library and let Mervyn's run it.
