  12.          An afternoon with Gregor Mendel and Kim Carnes

  15.      It was a hot summer afternoon like most.  Paul and I flipped
  16. baseball cards while Gregor Mendel worked out a hitch in the
  17. canning process.
  18.      "Peas!," he exclaimed, "Nature's candy!"
  19.      Paul chimed in, "Peas give you cooties."
  20.      I was way ahead of him, already reaming my ears with felt.
  21.      "No," he said, drawing a diagram on the ground of some stupid
  22. hybrid chart.
  23.      I distracted him, allowing Paul to sneak up behind him and
  24. crouch on all fours.  He gave the thumbs up and pointed to the
  25. fresh, smarmy pile of beagle dootie that lay Gregor was about to
  26. befriend.
  27.      I pushed.  Rommel advanced.  Paul scriptured.  I Gestapoed.
