  29. Well, this part I'm not sure of.  What is the current punishment for
  30. infanticide?  If this is less than that, I could go along with such a
  31. punishment for third-tri abortions for reasons not relating to the health
  32. and/or viability of the woman or fetus.  It would have to be pretty
  33. conclusively shown, though, that the intent was to kill a viable fetus.

  35. I doubt we would have many of these, though, seeing as there are so few
  36. third-tri abortions, and I know of none that are not done because of a health
  37. threat to the mother or fetus.  The main reasons I agree with Ms. Bartley are
  38. because I am uncomfortable with allowing a high-probability viable fetus to
  39. be killed for any reason other than this, and because I feel this compromise
  40. stance is more likely to be accepted by a majority of US citizens than
  41. specifying that a woman should be allowed to abort (and kill the fetus) all
  42. the way up to birth.

  44. Note that I am definitely in favor of abortion on demand through the 24th week
  45. of pregnancy.  I know that opens me to pro-life zealots chanting about the
  46. fact that one or two pre-24th week fetuses have survived -- but I don't
  47. believe that extraordinary occurances should be allowed to be used to define
  48. the term "viable".  I feel that equating viability with 25 weeks is a good
  49. compromise stance, even though 25 week fetuses are probably not usually very
  50. viable.
