  20. no official govt policy for eliminating female foetuses.

  22. India and is extremely expensive (as compared to abortion
  23. which used to be advertised for just the equivalent of $2 in 
  24. govt-approved clinics). However the rich who frequent these
  25.  clinics do appear to do so for the purpose of aborting
  26.  female foetuses. According to a statistic published
  27. in an Indian newspaper for the yaer 1990 (or maybe 89), of
  28. 800 women who discovered that they had female foetuses 
  29. 798 aborted them (of 20 million births annually). No statistics
  30.  were published as to
  31. how many of them were handicapped/deformed in any manner.
  32. Not infrequently feminist, socialist and communist 
  33. organisations in Bomaby hold protest rallies demanding regulation 
  34. of amniocentesis etc, for amniocentesis in the manner in which
  35. it is available in India is (maybe rightly)
  36. perceived by them as causing harm to the cause of Indian women.
  37. The equivalent of the right and the far right in India
  38. do not bother themselves with such issues and expend their energy
  39. on preserving "cultural values".

  41. Abortions are cheaply and easily available and abortion clinics
  42.  are very extensively advertised, but the mounting population
  43. seems to indicate that few women patronise them.
