  26. Seriously though, I think that a good metric is that if the person is
  27. disruptive enough to harm the work of the other people in the department,
  28. then they should not be granted tenure.  Of course, it might be the
  29. case that the whole rest of the department is made up of "jerks", and
  30. our lonely tenure-seeking person is the "decent human being".  In that
  31. case, it might not seem fair, but a person given a guaranteed job for
  32. life must be able to work with the group of people that are there.  If
  33. that means they ALL have to be jerks, then so be it!
