- I cornered David Cox (MD at UC San Francisco who developed radiation hybrid mapping
- techniques, apparently to the end of finding the loci for bipolar disorders) to ask
- him about medical education at UCSF and its reputation for encouraging research
- by its med students. He talked (very humbly) about how he is a pediatrician doing
- research in psychiatric genetics so that he could help people. He impressed on me,
- his intent I'm sure, that he is a doctor doing research as opposed to a scientist
- doing research, and that one's motivation in being a doctor should be primarily to
- help people. An interesting message to someone at the fork in the road to
- medicine or research.
