  22. I cornered David Cox (MD at UC San Francisco who developed radiation hybrid mapping
  23. techniques, apparently to the end of finding the loci for bipolar disorders) to ask
  24. him about medical education at UCSF and its reputation for encouraging research
  25. by its med students.  He talked (very humbly) about how he is a pediatrician doing
  26. research in psychiatric genetics so that he could help people.  He impressed on me,
  27. his intent I'm sure, that he is a doctor doing research as opposed to a scientist
  28. doing research, and that one's motivation in being a doctor should be primarily to 
  29. help people.  An interesting message to someone at the fork in the road to 
  30. medicine or research.
