  18. Microwaves are a type of radiation that has nothing to do with the
  19. radiation commonly associated with "DANGER - CANCER".  The latter
  20. is nuclear radiation and consists of high-energy particles such
  21. as alpha-rays, beta-rays (electrons), and gamma rays.  The way
  22. such radiation causes cancer is by destroying, more or less at
  23. random, the highly evolved biological molecules.  Sometimes the
  24. the part of a molecule that's destroyed is the gene that controls
  25. cell division.  When cell division is uncontrolled you have cancer.

  27. Microwave radiation does not interact with matter in this way, at
  28. least not at low power levels.  (Nuclear radiation at low intensities
  29. can cause cancer, however.  But intensity and power-levels are not the
  30. same thing in this context.)   As you should have figured out by
  31. now, microwaves HEAT matter by inducing the random motion in molecules
  32. and atoms that is associated with heat.  If microwaves destroyed the
  33. biological tissue in the manner that the "radar gun lawsuits" allege,
  34. then people would be very reluctant to eat food heated in microwave
  35. ovens.

  37. Microwaves at high power levels cause catastrophic failure of living
  38. things, but again through rapid heating, not through cancer.  This
  39. is familiar to radar operators on ships that spit out multiple megawatts
  40. of microwaves in pulses.  Hasta la vista, birdies (a reference to the
  41. immediate deaths experienced by any birds flying in front of the 
  42. radar antenna when turned on).
