- The concept of proving God's existence goes back to Aquinas (13th Century).
- (Eventually, the Reformation would finger Aquinas and the Roman Catholic
- Church for "secular humanism" on this account) Aquinas' preoccupation with
- this question lead to the advancement in scholastic logic---the logic of
- mathematics until the late 19th century. Descartes put forth several proofs,
- all of which were refuted. The arguments involved were instrumental in
- strengthening the logic of the day. The difficulties in "proving" the
- existence of God made it a seminal problem in logic---both philosophical and
- mathematical.
