  23. We don't have such a requirement in Canada, but as part of the 
  24. investiture requirements boys are expected to Understand, not just
  25. recite, the Scout promise. In particular most boys have a lot 
  26. of trouble with the "love and serve God" portion.

  28. As a leader, I ask boys to consider this phrase, then ask them 
  29. questions like:
  30. 1) Do you believe there is a god?
  31. 2) Tell me about your god.
  32. 3) Why do you believe this?
  33. 4) How is your religion different from others?
  34.  
  35. For many boys it's the first time they are forced to REALLY think
  36. about God. IMHO it's the toughest part of the promise.
  37. We never fail anyone on this, even if they're atheists or agnostics.
  38. We just expect them to really think about it.

  40. This isn't the same as "Scouting Spirit", but try asking the boys if they
  41. have Scouting Spirit, and if so why they think they do.
  42. At the very least you'll be entertained by their responses.
